Seek emergency veterinary care if you suspect your dog is bloating!

Bloating in dogs is a true emergency and time is crucial. I would contact your nearest animal emergency clinic (that is open). My links page has the websites of the emergency clinics in the Twin Cities area. If you know your dog is bloating – get in the car and drive there, but call the clinic on the way so that they can be prepared for your arrival.

Dog Bloat is Serious!

RECALL ALERT: Hospira is recalling a total of 19 lots of chemotherapy drugs due to the presence of visible particles embedded in the glass vial.

http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm311971.htm

RECALL ALERT: more fallout from excessive vitamin D in feeds. This one overlaps the previous recalls, and the focus is still on fish and more exotic/zoo/lab animal diets.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – July 13, 2012 – Feed Solutions has initiated a voluntary recall of certain varieties of the feed products with specific lot codes listed below, due to the potential for elevated vitamin D levels. Elevated vitamin D levels may cause death or otherwise be harmful to animals and fish if fed for extended periods, potentially resulting in lack of interest in eating, weight loss and possible joint stiffness.

Although no customer complaints have been received to date, the following products with specific lot numbers are being recalled as a precaution due to analytical test results on retained samples that indicate a potential for elevated levels of vitamin D.

These products were manufactured at the Richmond, IN feed plant and were distributed at select Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply stores nationwide starting April 2, 2012 through May 8, 2012. The affected Tractor Supply and Del’s Feed & Farm Supply locations have been contacted and asked to hold these products and to notify and retrieve the product from customers. The affected product should not be used, and where applicable, be returned to the closest Tractor Supply or Del’s Feed & Farm Supply location.

Lot numbers for the WellSolve W/G® product are laser printed at the bottom of the label next to the ingredients listing on each pail. Lot numbers for the other recalled products are laser printed on the back of each paper bag near the top. Lot numbers are formatted as follows: APR= Month / 17=Day of Month / 12 =Year / 2 =Plant Code.

Blue-green algae alert: Be careful with your dogs when swimming or cooling down.

Minnesota’s extended stretch of hot weather has prompted a warning about toxic blue-green algae.

The algae gathers on the surface of the water and is known to kill dogs if they drink enough of it. It can also cause rashes and respiratory problems for people. Be aware of the potential for trouble, and make sure kids and pets stay out of water that looks doubtful.

Blue-green algae feeds off phosphorous and other nutrients that may run into water. People can protect lakes and ponds by minimizing the runoff of yard or farm soil into waterways.
