Natura Press Release:
Natura Pet Issues Voluntary Recall of Specialized Dry Pet Foods Due to Possible Health Risk
FREMONT, NEBRASKA, June 18, 2013
Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
These products were packaged in a single production facility. During routine FDA testing, a single lot tested positive for the presence of Salmonella. There have been no reports of pet or human illness associated with this product. In an abundance of caution, Natura is voluntarily recalling all products with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014.
The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States and Canada. No canned wet food is affected by this announcement.

Natura Pet Products, which issued a recall of select lots of four brands of pet food last month, has expanded its recall to include all of the company’s dry pet food and treat products with expiration dates through March 24, 2014.
The recall was initiated after the Michigan Department of Agriculture discovered Salmonella in a sample taken from a pet food bag, and was expanded after both that agency and the Georgia Department of Agriculture discovered Salmonella in more dry pet food and a cat treat.
In addition to the four brands subject to the initial recall: California Natural, EVO, Healthwise and Innova, Natura has included its Karma brand products in this latest recall. Go here for a full list of recalled products.
No wet food or biscuits are affected by this recall, according to the company.
Products subject to this recall were sold through veterinary clinics and certain pet specialty retailers nationwide and in Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and Costa Rica, as well as online.
“Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. “Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.”
Pets can be carriers of Salmonella without showing symptoms and can infect other animals or humans, notes FDA.
“If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” advises the agency.
Consumers who have purchased these products should discard them or contact the company for a refund.

JoJo Ramone is recovering from a cold. He started sneezing and sniffing. He had nasal discharge but it was clear. In most cases, this is a virus. It’s important to make sure that your cat is eating and drinking. They should be seen if the nasal discharge is yellow or green or if they aren’t eating. Also – keep their vaccinations current (every 3 years). JoJo is on the mend….whew!

April 30, 2013 – Great Life Performance Pet Products has notified its distributors to request they withhold certain products from sale to consumers.
According to the company, the action is being taken because some packages are “not reaching full expiration date” as suggested by the presence of an unexplained odor.
The affected dog food products include:
- Great Life Grain Free Buffalo
- Dr. E’s Grain Free Buffalo
In its letter, Great Life assures distributors recent lab tests have found their Grain Free Buffalo products “free of Salmonella, E. coli, toxins, micro-toxins, etc.”.
